When the Anger Won't Quit

Sometimes the anger doesn't ebb. It becomes a constant, exhausting fire, or it hardens into bitterness that's hurting you more than him. That's not a moral failing or proof you're 'stuck on purpose.' It usually means the anger is carrying grief and hurt underneath that haven't been tended yet. This worksheet is for when anger gets stuck.

Stuck anger is usually pain wearing armor: Anger is often the bodyguard for softer, harder feelings - grief, fear, heartbreak. When it won't quit, it's usually guarding something underneath that needs care, not more force.

Underneath the anger

If the anger stepped aside for a moment, what's behind it? Often it's the heartbreak the anger is protecting you from feeling.

As the wound heals, the fire settles: You don't have to force the anger away or carry it forever. When you tend what's underneath, it eases on its own. If it stays stuck and consuming, a therapist can help you reach the grief beneath it - that's not weakness, it's wisdom.
