What Real Acknowledgment Looks Like
After betrayal, you deserve genuine acknowledgment - to have the person who hurt you truly see and own the pain they caused. Part of reclaiming your power is being able to tell the real thing from a performance, so you're never pressured to accept a hollow 'sorry' or talked into believing you got more than you did. This is for you, so you know what you're owed.
This is about recognizing the real thing - for your sake: Knowing what genuine acknowledgment looks like protects you from settling for less. This isn't about coaching him or managing his feelings - it's about your clarity and your right to be truly seen.
What real acknowledgment looks like
Genuine acknowledgment usually:
- Names what he did, specifically, without minimizing
- Stays with your pain without defending or rushing you
- Doesn't make his guilt your problem to soothe
- Shows up in changed behavior over time, not just words
- Has no 'but you...' attached
What a hollow apology looks like
Tick any you've been receiving.
- [ ] 'I'm sorry you feel that way'
- [ ] Rushing me to move on / forgive
- [ ] Making me comfort him about it
- [ ] Getting defensive or turning it around
- [ ] One apology, then nothing changes
- [ ] Blame-shifting
Honestly, what have I been receiving - the real thing, or a performance?

You're allowed to not accept a hollow apology: Knowing the difference protects you from being gaslit into 'good enough.' What you deserve is genuine, and you don't owe him acceptance of less. What you choose to do about the relationship is a separate decision that's entirely yours.
