Understanding the Addiction (Without Excusing It)
It can help to understand a little about what compulsive sexual behavior actually is - not to excuse it, not to make it your job to fix, and not to soften how much it hurt. Only so that you can stop carrying blame that was never yours. This understanding is for your clarity and peace, full stop. What you choose to do about the relationship is entirely separate.
Understanding is not excusing: Knowing why something happened doesn't make it okay, doesn't obligate you to stay, and doesn't make his healing your responsibility. Understanding is a gift you give yourself - it lifts the blame off your shoulders.
What it is, briefly
Compulsive sexual behavior is usually:
- A compulsion, rooted in his own pain, history, or way of coping
- About escape and regulation - not about you or your desirability
- Driven by his wiring and choices, present long before you
- His to address, with his own help and work
- Not something your love, effort, or 'enough-ness' could have cured
What this means for me
Tick what understanding this frees you from.
- [ ] It wasn't a reflection of my worth
- [ ] I couldn't have fixed it
- [ ] It's not my job to cure it
- [ ] Understanding it doesn't mean I have to stay
What does understanding this free me from?

This knowledge is for you: It lifts a weight off you that was never yours. It does not put a new one on - you are not now responsible for his recovery, and understanding the addiction is not a reason you owe him patience or another chance. That choice remains fully yours.
