Should I Pursue a Formal Assessment? A Decision Aid

This is a decision aid, not a nudge in either direction. Whether you pursue a formal assessment, self-identify, or simply sit with the question for now — that's yours to decide. This is here to help you weigh it honestly.

There's no single right answer: Self-identification is a valid path that much of the autistic community and the research recognize. A formal diagnosis is what currently unlocks certain legal protections and services. Both are legitimate. This worksheet is not trying to sell you an assessment.

Reasons a formal diagnosis might help you

  • Legal protection under the ADA — reasonable accommodations at work or school.
  • Access to services, vocational support, or funding that require a diagnosis.
  • Eligibility for some disability or insurance pathways tied to a formal diagnosis.
  • Clarity, closure, or an answer to a question you've carried a long time.
  • Entry to programs or research that ask for clinical documentation.

Real costs and barriers to weigh

  • Cost — adult evaluations often run a few thousand dollars, and insurance coverage varies a lot.
  • Waitlists — these commonly run several months and sometimes over a year.
  • Finding a clinician who's experienced assessing adults (not just children).
  • The risk of not being believed, especially if you mask well.
  • The emotional toll of the process itself.

Your turn — what matters most to you?

Rate how strongly each one pulls on your decision. There are no right numbers.

How much do you need formal accommodations or legal protection right now? (1 = not at all, 10 = urgently)

Rate from 1 to 10: ____

How much do you need services or funding that require a diagnosis? (1 = none, 10 = a lot)

Rate from 1 to 10: ____

How big a barrier is the cost for you? (1 = manageable, 10 = out of reach)

Rate from 1 to 10: ____

How much does a long wait affect your decision? (1 = fine to wait, 10 = I need answers now)

Rate from 1 to 10: ____

In your own words, why are you considering a formal assessment? What would it give you that you don't have now?

e.g. Be honest — this is for you.

Where you're leaning

Tick where you are today. It's allowed to change.

  • [ ] I want to pursue a formal assessment.
  • [ ] Self-identification feels right for me, at least for now.
  • [ ] I'm not sure yet — and that's okay.

If you've landed somewhere, what's one small next step?

e.g. e.g. research providers, join a community, revisit in three months.

A gentle note: Whatever you choose, you're the expert on your own life. This worksheet is a learning tool, not an assessment or treatment. Only a qualified professional can make a formal diagnosis, and your self-knowledge is real and valid either way.
