Late, Not Wrong
If you weren't identified until adulthood, it's easy to feel like you 'should have known sooner' — or that maybe it isn't real because no one caught it. Here's the truth the research backs up: the criteria were largely built around boys, girls and women are far more likely to mask, and that combination kept a whole generation of women under the radar. Being missed isn't evidence against you. It's evidence the system was looking for the wrong thing.
How I got missed
Tick what fits your story.
- [ ] I masked so well that no one saw the struggle underneath
- [ ] I was 'quiet' or 'shy' or a 'daydreamer,' not disruptive
- [ ] I was given other labels first (anxiety, depression, bipolar, 'too sensitive')
- [ ] I coped on the surface while falling apart privately
- [ ] My interests didn't match the stereotype, so no one connected the dots
Re-reading my story
Look back with this new lens. So much that felt like personal failure often makes sense now.

You weren't broken, you were unsupported: A late identification doesn't mean you failed to notice something obvious. It means you adapted brilliantly to a world that never made space for you — at a cost you can finally name.
