Forgiving Myself (For the Betrayed Partner)

One of the cruelest parts of being betrayed is the blame you turn on yourself: 'I should have seen it,' 'if I'd been enough this wouldn't have happened,' 'how was I so stupid to trust them?' This worksheet is about setting that down. The affair was a choice your partner made — it was never a verdict on your worth.

The blame I've turned on myself

  • [ ] 'I should have seen the signs'
  • [ ] 'If I'd been enough, they wouldn't have'
  • [ ] 'I was naive / stupid to trust them'
  • [ ] 'I caused this somehow'

Other ways I've blamed myself

Whose choice it was

Relationship problems can be shared. The choice to betray, lie, and hide was your partner's alone — made by them, owned by them. Trusting the person you love was not a mistake on your part.

What I'd say to a friend

You would never tell a friend it was their fault they were lied to. Say that to yourself.

Setting it down

A kinder, truer thing I can hold instead of the blame

Being betrayed was not your fault: Trusting someone wasn't a failure. Being lied to wasn't something you did. You don't owe yourself this punishment — you owe yourself the same compassion you'd give anyone you love.
