Emotion Words Beneath Anger

Anger is a second feeling, not a first one. Underneath it there is almost always a primary feeling that arrived earlier and had no words attached to it.

This chart gives you those words. Each group names a family of primary feelings. Each row gives a headline feeling, the related words that cluster around it, and what you need when that feeling is present.

When anger shows up, scan the groups below for the word that fits best. Then read across to the last column — that is the thing to ask for.

Anger is the second feeling: Anger is loud, fast, and protective, so it reaches the surface before the feeling that caused it. Naming the first feeling is not weakness — it gives the other person something they can actually respond to.
